Subject: Why Our Hearts (and Our Business) Belong to Rome, Georgia
By Fr. David Burrows, Founder of Rome Public Adjusting
My Matushka Elizabeth and I are often asked why we chose Rome, Georgia, as the place to put down roots, both personally and professionally, with the launch of Rome Public Adjusting (RomePA). The answer, quite simply, is that Rome has captured our hearts in a profound and lasting way. It’s more than just a charming Southern town; it’s a place with a unique soul that resonates deeply with our Orthodox Christian faith and our commitment to serving others.
One of the first things you notice about Rome is the pervasive sense of faith. It’s not unusual to see multiple churches gracing a single corner, a testament to the vibrant spiritual life of this community. The frequent and heartfelt prayer of "Lord have mercy" echoes in the daily lives of its people, a reminder of our shared humanity and our reliance on God's grace. For us, as Orthodox Christians, this spiritual atmosphere is a constant source of comfort and inspiration.
The values of Rome resonate deeply with our own. This is a community that openly loves Jesus Christ, where even law enforcement proudly displays scriptures – a powerful statement that "Christ is King" in their hearts and service. There's a strong sense of patriotism here, a willingness to stand for convictions, as evidenced by the passionate voices that emerge from this region.
Historically, Rome has played a significant role in our nation’s story, even being the former home of a First Lady like Ellen Axson Wilson. This connection to the broader American narrative gives the city a sense of weight and importance.
Geographically, Rome is blessed by the confluence of three rivers that reach out and touch the world, a beautiful symbol of connection and flow. It’s where the majestic Appalachian mountain foothills begin, imbuing the landscape and the people with a sense of ancient heritage and resilience. And who can forget the catchy country tune that proudly sings the praises of our beloved Rome? It’s a testament to the local pride and character.
The heart of Rome beats with a strong emphasis on education, quality medical care, and cherished Southern traditions. There’s a genuine love for neighbor here, a willingness to extend a helping hand, especially during times of need. And when the Christmas season arrives, Rome truly shines with a warmth and joy that is contagious.
Strolling through Downtown Rome is like stepping back in time to one of the finest main streets in the USA. The beautifully preserved architecture and vibrant local businesses create a welcoming and thriving atmosphere.
We have also been deeply moved by Rome's reverence for those who have passed on. The city is graced with beautiful cemeteries, places of peaceful remembrance. We pray that the sacred art and ministry of honoring the reposed will continue to be rekindled in all our hearts.
For those who appreciate the beauty of the natural world, Rome offers miles upon miles of trails just a stone's throw away from our homes. This accessibility to nature is a true gift.
As people of faith, we also acknowledge the painful history of the treatment of native peoples in this land and remain in a state of repentance, striving for understanding, healing, and reconciliation.
Rome, Georgia, is more than just a pin on a map. It possesses a unique ethos, a rich history, and a spirit of community that has embraced us wholeheartedly. It is why we have chosen to make it our home, the base for our priestly work, and the foundation upon which we are building Rome Public Adjusting. We are honored to be a part of this special place and look forward to serving our neighbors with the same love and dedication that Rome has shown to us. We believe that "People Are For Caring," and there is no place we would rather live out that principle than right here in the heart of Rome, Georgia.
